Mr. Rochester makes everyone go to see his wife Bertha (Maria Schneider). Grace is her caretaker. Mr. Rochester says his family forced him to marry Bertha for financial gain. He didn't learn she was mad until after the ceremony. He's spent the last 15 years in torment as a result. Bertha grabs a burning stick and lunges for Mr. Rochester. In the ensuing panic, Jane slips out.
