Adele dances for Jane, Mrs. Fairfax and Mr. Rochester. When Adele wants to stay up late, Mr. Rochester harshly sends her to bed. Jane protests his behavior. Mr. Rochester explains how he came to be in charge of Adele: her mother an opera dancer told Mr. Rochester he was the father. He wasn't. The mother abandoned Adele and he took her because he was all Adele had in the world. Jane says Adele can't be punished for her mother's faults.
