Mendel apologizes for how their marriage turned out. He's been doing a lot of thinking and Sonia is Sonia and Mendel is Mendel--they're too different and never should have been married in the first place. He's brought her a birthday present. Sonia tries to demur, but Mendel says Yom Kippur's coming and he wants to do right by her before God. Sonia opens Mendel's present to find a ruby, he says it's her birthstone. Sonia is touched. Mender tells her to come by and visit the baby, it's doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Sonia says "God bless you" to Mendel and means it with all of her heart.
