On her birthday young Sonia listens to her older brother Yossi tell a tale about a young woman who ran away to the woods rather than endure an arranged marriage. The young woman comes back pregnant and when she dies, ends up as a ghost, doomed to wander the earth. Yossi gives Sonia a fake ruby as a present, which Sonia doesn't like. Yossi goes swimming.
