Arlo makes an ice cream delivery to the diner, Mason is there to receive it. Two sheriffs enter, one claiming Mason sold beer to his underage son. Tension rises when Mason denies it; after several accusations and a warning, the sheriffs leave. Arlo's trying to get cash for the delivery, when Dr. Long bursts in through the door, bleeding. He tells Mason to take the compact that he took to Fort McGruder in Arlo's icecream truck, explaining that if the compact reaches 52 degrees, everything within hundreds of miles will be destroyed. Brynner and his team, in pursuit, find Long's car. Long dies. Brynner enters the diner and Arlo and Mason are forced to act casual. Not finding anything, Brynner leaves. Mason convinces Arlo to take his truck and go with him.
