Meg, Calvin and Charles Wallace walk up to the large Central Central Intelligence building that looks like a fortress. The entrance appears heavily fortified, but the door opens as they approach and closes behind them. Inside, a steel gargoyle in the shape of a snake with red eyes watches overhead. The rotunda of the building is massive, with several levels and banners hanging from the domed ceiling. In the middle of the room, a uniformed bald man wearing sunglasses calls out letters and numbers he reads from an enormous rolodex on his desk. Administrative types and suits stand by attentively. One of them instructs the kids on how to fill out the forms and follow the proper procedure. Several uniformed officers eye the kids suspiciously. Lightning continues as the bald man keeps reading off combinations. The small girl in a pink jumpsuit from outside the theater points out Meg and Calvin to the officers, who then start to follow them. The kids go through one of the doors lining the rotunda, trying to avoid the officers.
