Mrs. Whatsit picks an unusual 'Firefruit' from a vine and brings it to the clearing where Meg, Charles Wallace and Calvin sit on some tree trunks. Colorful flowers abound. Mrs. Whatsit breaks the plant open and flames starts burning, which she then pours onto some dry tree branches to start a fire. Mrs. Whatsit explains what a tesseract is and uses an insect, beetle crawling on her dress to describe how a 'wrinkle in time' works. Afterwards, Mrs. Whatsit disappears into thin air. The children go to pick blue flowers and behind them, Mrs. Whatsit reappears as a fantastical white horse with human head and colorful wings. The children climb up onto the horse's back.
