Meg walks into the suburban house, followed by the family dog. She grabs a piece of fruit from the kitchen and heads into the family room. She greets her mother Dana, who's reading a science magazine. Her twin brothers play table football with each other, getting competitive and berating Meg. Meg goes to the window and looks out at the stars again. Her brilliant younger brother Charles Wallace peeks out from under the foosball table. He's been reading a book with a flashlight under a blanket and remarks about something he read. We see a close-up of the encyclopedia he's been reading, with illustrations of a Soviet or Russian astronaut and a hairball amongst the text. A bright light shines in the trees outside as thunder claps and crows caw.
