A hologram of McCandless explains why he wanted Alex's body; he's loved Julie for a long time and he wanted her to return his feelings. McCandless apologizes to Alex and Julie. He calls Vacendak and halts the search. McCandless offers to let Alex run the company. McCandless has Alex try to delete his conciousness, but he's stalling until Vacendak arrives. Alex is forced into the transfer machine. Just as the transfer process gets underway Michellette stumbles in, wounded from fighting Vacendak's soldiers. In the confusion, Julie grabs a soldier's gun and shoots the processing device used by the transfer computers. The transfer results are deemed inconclusive, McCandless' scientists cannot tell if the transfer completed and conclude that McCandless will have to identify himself. Michellette agrees, revealing that only McCandless will know his own personal ID code; a code that Alex wouldn't know. Vacendak gets a handheld computer which displays McCandless' code, he instructs "Alex" to tell him what it is. Alex recites the code slowly. Michelette concludes that the transfer was completed and tries to kill Alex, but is gunned down by Vacendak. "Alex" remarks about how well he feels in his "new" body, before ordering Julie to dress more appropriately, they'll be going for a ride.
