To celebrate Ray takes the girls for ice cream. However on the way home, he stops by a bar, leaving the girls in the car. Sonya has a flashback of when she was young: after the death of her mother, Ray fell behind on house payments and the family ended up in a transient hotel. Young Greta goes deaf and mute, but Ray doesn't have the money to and is also scared to take her to the doctor. Greta plays dangerously; Ray scolds Sonya for not looking after her better. All of a sudden one day, Greta begins talking and speaking again.
