Graff and Gwen discuss Ender quitting and using children for war. On Earth, Valentine returns home to find Graff there. Graff drives Valentine to a lake, where she reunites with Ender, hugging him. Ender and Valentine row a boat and talk about the fight with Bonzo and his subsequent injury. Ender tells Valentine about his ability to defeat an enemy so they won't hurt him again. Valentine tells him that she was sent to convince him to return and says that she thinks he's afraid. Valentine encourages him to go back. Ender says he'll miss her and they hug.
ICONIC QUOTE:
"My God. You really don't see them as children, do you? It used to be a war crime to recruit anyone under the age of 15."
"When the war is over, we can have the luxury of debating the morality of what we do."
"When it's over, what will be left of the boy?"
"What does it matter, if there's nothing left at all?"
(Major Gwen Anderson, Colonel Hyrum Graff)
"In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him."
(Ender Wiggins)
