Ender writes a letter home to Valentine about Battle School. In a montage: Ender attends class; trains in hand-to-hand combat with Bernard in a class led by Dap; watches the Mazer Rackham footage again; and eats alone in the cafeteria. Dap interrupts Ender's letter writing, calling the kids to attention. Graff addresses the kids, telling them that some are failing to meet standards and are being sent home. Graff tells the kids to look to their left and right, and that the people standing next to them are not their friends, but competition. Ender asks if letters home are being blocked and Graff confirms it, telling him there's too much at stake to let communications be sent out. Dap, angry at Ender for asking the question, makes him do push-ups. Ender remains defiant, pressing the issue, angering Dap further. Dap tells the kids to go to sleep, which Ender repeats to them. Ender lies on his bed.
