In a flashback, Sonya reminiscences about how she, Greta and Valery would go to visit her grandma who lived at the shore every summer. The last summer they went for a visit, Valery spent a lot time with an old high sweetheart, they found a dead octopus on the shore and Valery found out she had cancer. It was a confusing time for Sonya, who wasn't told that her mother was sick. She's disappointed when her mother cuts her visit short. It's 3 months before Sonya sees her mother again. Valery declines and dies.
