Mr. Webster takes away Sonya's journal for not paying attention in class. Later he flips through it. A flashback of young Sonya going to the movies with Valery. Valery wins a raffle for a set of dishes at the movies and basks in the applause of the audience. Later Ray complains about the ugly dishes and promises Valery that he'll buy her the finest dishes once he strikes it rich. When Sonya comes at the end of the day to pick up her journal, Mr. Webster encourages Sonya, telling her that she's a talented writer and that she can turn in her stories for credit.
