Elizabeth calls Ernest and tells him she has nowhere else to turn. Then Ernest gives himself a shot of medicine or drugs, we can't be sure. He goes to her house. In flashback, we see Alex say goodbye to Elizabeth a day before the murder. He said he would be at the library. She went looking for him, but he wasn't there. She sees Alex pick up Jeri, the waitress and drive off. She tells Ernest she spied on them.
