Kemp is driven through San Juan while he drinks. He gets out and walks though a political rally to a newspaper office where he's been hired. It's his first day. He meets everyone and he's told by the boss Lotterman the paper is failing and he's supposed to bring fresh blood so he can't be too much of a drunk. The man he's replacing was raped to death, he's told.
