Hawkeye, Chingachgook and Uncas track Magua as he takes his prisoners through the forest to an Indian camp, ruled by a chief named Sachem, who has jurisdiction over Magua. Hawkeye brazenly walks into the camp. He announces he's unarmed and pleads with Sachem to let the girls go in order to curb the English anger. Magua says he does not fear English anger. They debate this. Finally, Sachem says Cora should burn, but Duncan offers to take her place. They burn him as Hawkeye gets Cora out of the camp. Hawkeye shoots Duncan from afar to put him out of his misery.
