Hawkeye tries to convince Munro to let the militia men go back to their homes to keep their families safe. Munro says no; anyone who leaves is to be shot for desertion. Duncan argues with Munro and also Cora is angry with him; she leaves the room. Duncan goes after her and tells her when they're married, none of this will matter. Cora tells Duncan she won't marry him and that decision is final. Militia men sit around campfires at the fort since the fighting has died down. Hawkeye tries to counsel the men about whether they should desert or not. Some say they will leave--but Hawkeye says he will stay because of Cora.
