The girls are reunited with their father, Col. Edmund Munro. He tells them they weren't supposed to be there. He asks why they came and they said they didn't receive any letters from him telling them not to come. That means none of the letters requesting reinforcements went through either, which means they will lose the battle. Col. Munro wants to send couriers to a fort twelve miles away asking General Webb for more men.
