A decadent royal party at the palace, complete with fireworks. Wessex questions Wilhelmina as to whether a poet has been hanging around Viola. When Wilhelmina confirms that he has, Wessex is angry. Viola is presented to Queen Elizabeth, who recognizes her from Viola coming to royal productions of plays. Wilhelmina goads Wessex into betting fifty pounds that a play cannot capture the nature of true love. If Romeo and Juliet is a success, Shakespeare as playwright will win the money. The Queen agrees to be a witness to the wager. Privately the Queen tells Wessex that Viola has lost her virginity. He assumes it's Marlowe.
