Pu Yi, now 15, is presented with his new tutor, Reginald. They shake hands vigorously. Awkwardly and hilariously so. Then Pu Yi has his first lesson. He tells Reg he is always told what to say and wishes he could say what he thinks. Reg gives him a copy of the Saturday Evening Post with a picture of George Washington on it. Reg spots Pu Yi's pet mouse and he asks his tutor to keep it secret.
ICONIC QUOTE:
"Words are important."
"Why are words important?"
"If you cannot say what you mean, your majesty, you will never mean what you say and a gentleman always mean what he says."
(Reginald Fleming 'R.J.' Johnston, Pu Yi, at 15)
"I know that you know that I know that you know that that is a dialogue between Confucius and Chuang Tzu."
(Pu Yi, at 15)
"Who is this George Washington?"
"A famous American, your majesty. A revolutionary general, the first American president."
"Ah, like Mr. Lenin in Russia?"
"Not quite."
"Does he have a car?"
"He lived a long time ago, your majesty."
"I want a car."
(Pu Yi, at 15, Reginald Fleming 'R.J.' Johnston)
