In the woods, Young Bloom watches a girl playing with some boys. Young Stephen pushes him out and tells him to go talk to her. Young Bloom runs away. The brothers plan a con. A montage shows the con, beginning with Young Bloom talking to the girl. Young Bloom tells a group of children a story about a hermit in the woods and a cave of wonders. The children pay to find out more. Young Bloom leads the children into the cave, where they see a light. Young Bloom doesn't follow the other children. The con is successful, but Young Bloom is unhappy. The childrens' parents are unhappy too, and the brothers are forced to leave the town and their foster family.
