Time passes, it's winter. Herman gets a call from Masha's mother; Masha is sick. Yadwiga argues with him, she knows he has a mistress. When Herman arrives at Masha's, the doctor tells him that Masha hemorrhaged, she was never pregnant. Masha's mother is devastated, she so wanted a grandchild.
