Mazer uses a simulator to show Ender what's happening on the Formic planet. Dozens of alien ships fly over the planet. Mazer explains that their orders are to defeat them before they become a threat, then tells Ender that he'll be using the simulator to simulate battles, with Ender issuing commands. Ender watches the simulator as spaceships fly out in formations. Mazer tells Ender that his most important duty is to protect an expensive weapon that Petra will fire. Ender says he'll only be able to use the weapon once. Mazer says he has to win the war one battle at a time.
