A carriage takes Darwin home after Annie's death. He goes to church and sees Reverend Innes. Emma is there praying and ever since, he tells the doctor they've been divided on whether God exists. The doctor thinks that his physical symptoms are the result of his thoughts, that they are psychosomatic because of grief. He tells Darwin to go to Annie's grave because he's never been there.
