His assistant delivers a letter to him from the spice islands. Darwin reads it and laughs. Then he sits, sickly, on a bench outside. Reverend Innes joins him, asking him if he finished his book. Darwin says it's been finished for him because a naturalist in the spice islands came to the same conclusions in a mere 20 page pamphlet. When Innes says the Lord works in mysterious ways, Darwin wonders why he created 900 species of intestinal worms. They argue and Innes leaves.
