Fort Smith, Arkansas 1967 Marshall Stouffer runs through the woods, only to get captured by his brothers, Mark and Marty, who force him to participate in their experiment. Marshall is dangled from a chair hanging over a pool, and let go. Marshall is recorded while they throw firecrackers at him. Marshall gets revenge by scrubbing the toilet with their toothbrushes. Their parents Agnes and Marty Sr. Stouffer are introduced. The Stouffer family rehabilitates hurt animals, Marshall's favorite being an owl with a broken wing. Marshall looks at clouds with Leon, the Stouffer's farmhand.
