Josh holds the baby over Vera's body, floating in the water. Then he hitchhikes along a highway and a bus stops for him. He doesn't have any money. So he gives the driver his cross. He sleeps on the bus, holding the baby. They get to a bus station and from there, he walks to the Red Cross.
